One Direction is an english and irish pop boy band that formed in 2010 on the tv show X-factor. Originally, the band was made of Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik. After X factor, the band signed to Syco and released their first album in 2011. The record was entitled Up All Night and propelled the band to international success. The lead single of the album, “What Makes You Beautiful”, was the most pre-ordered Sony Music Entertainment single of all time and won Best British Single at the BRIT Awards in 2012.The record includes tracks written by Kelly Clarkson, Tom Fletcher and Ed Sheeran. In 2012, the band released their second album Take Me Home. The lead single “Live While We’re Young”’s video broke the record for the most views within the first 24 hours of it’s release with 8.24 million. The second single “Little Things” and the album were both number ones in the UK at the same time. In 2013, the band released their 3D concert and documentary film This Is Us shortly followed by their third album Midnight Memories. Both projects were critically acclaimed; the movie was a box office success and the album led to the band’s first stadium tour. In 2014, the band released another concert film called One Direction: Where We Are followed by a autobiography called Where We Are. They also released their Fourth album Four which included singles such as “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes”. The record topped both British and American charts. In 2015, the band announced Zayn Malik’s departure to pursue a solo career. Shortly after, the band released “Drag Me Down” which was the first single of the their fifth album Made in the A.M.. Not long after, the band announced they would be taking a break in order to focus on personal projects during 2016. Since then, most members have signed individual contracts with different record labels.
