The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a Funk rock band formed in 1983. The band is from Los Angeles. The original lineup consisted of Anthony Kiedis, Jack Irons, Hillel Slovak and Michael Balzary (Flea). They began playing in several clubs in LA. Their shows were loud and outrageous and attracted a following very quickly. After only 6 months of playing together, EMI offered them a record deal. At the time, Jack and Hillel were in another band which was also offered a record deal. They both opted to leave the “Red Hot Chilli Peppers” and the remaining band members had to find replacements. Cliff Martinez started playing drums for them very quickly and eventually they hired John Sherman as their guitarist. They started recording their debut album and released it in 1984. Unfortunately, it was a failure. Hillel’s band’s album did even worse which led him to join the RHCP once again. A year later, the band's second album didn't do much better than the first. They went on tour around the country. Their live shows were held in nightclubs and were a growing success. However, due to drug use, Flea and Anthony became unreliable. After the tour, Cliff Martinez decided to quit the band and Jack Irons rejoined it. At this point in time, the band was infected with drug abuse. Their third album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan managed to reach the billboard top 200 but quickly faded as their first two albums had. In 1988, Hillel died of an overdose. This terribly affected the band and resulted in Jack leaving. Being down to two members once again, Anthony and Flea started looking for a new guitarist and drummer. John Frusciante joined as their guitarist and Chad Smith joined as their new drummer. In 1989, the album Mother’s Milk came out and went gold. Being a “visual band”, MTV gave them a platform to conjoin their live performances and their music into video format. However, John didn't stay in the band and they were missing a guitarist once more. In 1991, Blood Sugar Sex Magik came out and shot to the top. This album was their breakthrough album. During a tour, John Frusciante quit because of his relationship with drugs. Dave Navarro became the band’s guitarist but was fired shortly after. John Frusciante came out of rehab and rejoined the band. He grew stronger as did the band. In 1999, Californication was released and in 2002, By The Way came out. Both albums performed well. In 2006, the band released Stadium Arcadium. It sold over 7 million copies. In 2009, after a break from recording and touring, the band returned to the studio but instead of having Frusciante on the guitar, Josh Klinghoffer took the role of guitarist. In 2011, the band released their tenth album I’m with You which was number one in over 18 countries. It was followed by live EPs in 2012 and in 2014. The band performed at the Super Bowl XLVII alongside Bruno Mars in 2014. In 2016, the band released The Getaway, which reached number one in 10 countries and number two in the UK, the US and Canada.
