Metallica is a heavy metal band from California founded in 1981. The band currently includes James Hetfield on rhythmic guitar and vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums (both were founders of the group), as well as Kirk Hammett who is the guitarist (joined the band in 1983) and Robert Trujillo who is the bassist (joined the band in 2003). Previous members include Lloyd Grant, Ron McGovney, Dave Mustaine, Cliff Burton, John Marshall, Jason Newsted and Bob Rock. The band is known for introducing and pioneering thrash metal. It was also one of the most influential heavy metal groups in the ‘80s and the ‘90s.Their lyrics address taboo subjects such as drug abuse, mental illness, and suicide. The first album they released in 1983 was entitled “Kill ‘Em All”. The album itself was not a world success. However, the tour that supported them helped the band develop a strong underground following. In 1984, Metallica released their album “Ride The Lightning”, this album is now considered an archetype in thrash metal. Their popularity grew as they performed and eventually they signed to a major label called “Elektra Records”.Their following album named Master Of Puppets came out in 1986 and is remembered as the most influential album of heavy metal. The tour that followed was hit by tragedy; Cliff Burton died in a bus crash. Two years later, the band released an album entitled And Justice for All. The complexity of their compositions really showed with speed and volume manipulations. In 1991 they release their self-titled album. This one shot to the top of several charts around the world. This made them gain even more popularity. Many of their well known singles such as “Enter Sandman”, “The unforgiven” and “Nothing Else Matters” are all from this album. During the following few years, the band toured and became the leaders of the heavy metal genres. In 1996, their album Load was criticised by old fans as their musical direction moved away slightly from their early thrash metal years. The band released Reload the following year and both albums were number ones. In 2000, the band contributed to the soundtrack of Mission Impossible two. In 2003, the band released their album St. Anger which ended up winning them a grammy. In 2008, the band released Death Magnetic which featured more complex guitar solos than the previous release and marked their return to their thrash metal style. In 2011, Metallica collaborated with Lou Reed and dropped the album, Lulu. Their tenth album will be released in 2016.
